Powell, home of Northwest
College
,
is located in Buffalo Bill's Cody/Yellowstone Country just 23 miles from Cody.
Powell was named for Major John Wesley Powell, famed proponent of western land
reclamation and an explorer of the Rocky Mountain West.
Powell adds diversity to Buffalo Bill's Cody / Yellowstone Country in that it has an agricultural economy. The area has been enriched by the control of water through the Buffalo Bill Dam. These irrigation waters transformed the sagebrush and hardscrabble of the area into abundant grain, sugar beet fields and pasture.
The town and the surrounding area are a tribute to the farming pioneers of a century ago. Many exhibits, points of interest, and a museum mark their efforts.
How to Get There
Just 23 miles from Cody and less than 2 hours drive
from Yellowstone National Park, Powell is on Highway 14A, a major east-west connector
in northern Wyoming.
